A few years ago someone used the term “Methodology vs. Technology” and it has really stuck with me. His point was… you can have all the technology in the world… all the bells and whistles… all the systems.. etc etc But, if the methodology in your thinking is not where it needs to be, the technology is irrelevant!

The “where am I am going” and “why am I going there” is a good place to start!

Yes, a very good point, Todd. First, I apologize for taking so long to get back to this blog and your comment. I think you are correct in asking “What does the Web environment demand of us?” It has made me re-think how I think about the Web, the New Media, the Now Media, and Social Media. They are all nodes on the same network. The Web. What the Web demands of us is broad, dynamic thinking and purposeful interaction. We must understand that, at some level, everything we do affects everyone else at some level. We must understand that it is individual responsibility that contributes to the strength of the whole, And, we must understand that to lead in this environment, we must learn to listen, humble ourselves, and share.

I’m hesitant to paint with so broad a brush. First, I haven’t seen the evidence for saying “Most are trying to optimize the Web for their business processes rather than optimizing their business processes for the Web.” Second, there are probably enough success stories using the first tack–although, like you, I would advocate the latter route.
Given the binary choice, I do prefer asking, “What does the web environment demand of us?” to asking, “What can we get out of the web?” But I think both questions need asking.
